Car Seat Gap Filler: What It Is and How to Choose One

A car seat gap filler is a slim piece that sits in the gap between the front seat and the center console, so phones, keys, cards, coins and earbuds stop falling into it. This page explains the main kinds, how to choose one, and how to check the fit before you buy.

What a car seat gap filler does

In most cars there is a narrow space beside each front seat. Things that slip in are hard to reach and easy to lose. A gap filler blocks that space. The right one fills your gap without getting in the way of the seat, the seat belt buckle or the seat controls.

The main kinds

Soft strips and wedges

Foam or neoprene strips press into the gap and fill it. They tend to cope with a range of gap widths because the material gives. Some have a cutout for the seat belt buckle.

Organizer style

These fill the gap and add pockets, slots or a cup holder on top. They suit people who want storage, but they need more room and a gap that suits their size.

Rigid caddies

Hard plastic bodies, usually with a built-in pocket and a base that grips the seat. They hold their shape, and they only suit the gap sizes they are made for.

How to choose the right one

  1. Measure your gap. Width matters most. Gaps differ from car to car, and sometimes from the front to the rear of the same gap. Our free measuring tool works from one photo and a bank card.
  2. Decide what you need. Just stopping things from falling in? A simple strip is enough. Want pockets or a cup holder? Look at organizers.
  3. Check the seat belt buckle. You should be able to buckle and unbuckle easily with the filler in place.
  4. Test seat movement. Run the seat fully forward, back and through the recline range. Remove the filler if anything catches.
  5. Read your owner’s manual for anything about the space beside the seat, including airbags. If it says to keep it clear, do not fit anything there.

Our car seat gap filler

Our filler is a pair of foam strips with a wipe-clean leather-look finish. Each is 40.9 cm (about 16 in) long, 6.5 cm (about 2.5 in) wide and 3.3 cm thick. It hangs in the gap, comes in black, beige, red or brown, and is $24.95 for the pair with free US shipping. You can ask to return it within 30 days of delivery.

It is a gap filler, not a storage organizer. If your photo shows a gap wider than 6.5 cm, the tool will tell you it will not hold.

Questions people ask

Will a gap filler fit my car?

It depends on your gap, not only on the make and model. We have not measured every vehicle, so we do not promise a fit by model. Measure yours with the photo tool, or ask us and we will tell you what we know.

Does a gap filler get in the way of the seat belt?

It should not. Keep the buckle free, and check that you can buckle and unbuckle easily after you fit it.

Can I use one on both sides?

Our filler comes as a pair, one for each front seat.

How do I clean it?

Ours has a wipe-clean leather-look finish, so a damp cloth is enough.

Is it safe near airbags?

Check your owner’s manual for anything about the space beside the seat. If it says to keep that space clear, do not fit anything there.
